Last night around a table of my three smiling friends, the subject of Lenten sacrifices came up. Who was giving up what, and what had we given up in the past?
During Lent, which lasts for about six weeks leading up to Easter, Christians commit to fasting or giving something up as a form of repentance. I’ve always been fond of a more positive approach (shocking, I know). I prefer to DO something proactively, rather than give up things like chocolate or coffee.
In the past, I’ve done things like eating more veggies and sending handwritten notes to my loved ones.
Last night, I heard one of the best Lenten sacrifices ever. My friend Meredith decided to give up hating herself. Interesting, right?
We all have self-loathing thoughts – it’s inevitable. We are often hard on ourselves and assign self blame for things out of our control. This is clearly not healthy behavior, and as much as we understand that, how many people do something to change it?
Meredith has made a commitment to acknowledging these feelings and redirecting her thoughts. A negative thought pops up – she’ll start working on a project that makes her feel productive. Self doubt creeps in — she thinks about positive influences in her life like her friend and business partner, DJ.
It makes me so happy to know that this magnificent woman is focusing on letting go of the feelings that degrade that fabulousness that encompasses her.
She has definitely inspired me to think of ways to redirect my inevitable self-loathing thoughts. We all have them. Why not have a plan for dealing with them positively?
