Joyous Joy 55: An Unconventional Lenten Sacrifice

Last night around a table of my three smiling friends, the subject of Lenten sacrifices came up. Who was giving up what, and what had we given up in the past?

During Lent, which lasts for about six weeks leading up to Easter, Christians commit to fasting or giving something up as a form of repentance. I’ve always been fond of a more positive approach (shocking, I know). I prefer to DO something proactively, rather than give up things like chocolate or coffee.

In the past, I’ve done things like eating more veggies and sending handwritten notes to my loved ones.

Last night, I heard one of the best Lenten sacrifices ever. My friend Meredith decided to give up hating herself. Interesting, right?

We all have self-loathing thoughts – it’s inevitable. We are often hard on ourselves and assign self blame for things out of our control. This is clearly not healthy behavior, and as much as we understand that, how many people do something to change it? Continue reading
